Microsoft Bing - Bling bling?

C'est la déferlante des mecs de chez Redmond. Certes, je ne suis pas l'actualité de très près, mais pour moi, ce fut une surprise totale de voir débarquer ce tout nouveau moteur.

Il n'est pas bien compliqué de voir de qui Microsoft s'est inspiré. Allez, je décris:

- Un site au design épuré
- Une grosse zone de texte au milieu pour entrer la recherche
- Juste au dessus, quelques liens: Web, Images, Vidéos, Shopping, News, Maps, More
- Quelques autres liens éparts: sign-in, privacy...

Alors? Bing? Google? Les deux, mon général! Même le petit "Beta" en dessous du logo Bing rappelle les vielles habitudes de la firme de Mountain View.

Alors, quoi de Bing?

• Les résultats semblent assez équivalents. Les sujets techniques donnent à peu près les mêmes réponses, les recherches générales semblent faire remonter Wikipedia chez les deux.


• Quelques différences significatives, cependant. Chercher "deezer violon tante estelle" amène en première position au feed de mon post chez Wikio. Mais alors que Google lie directement mon post en deuxième position, il est absent de chez Bing? Est-ce que Microsoft a du mal à lire les blogs de Google? Ou est-ce qu'ils les évitent? Ou est-ce que Google les bloque?


• Je n'aime pas le chargement à la volée lors des recherches d'images, qui rend le scrolling particulièrement douloureux. Le choix de Google d'une page complètement chargée, avec moins de photos, me semble plus intéressant.


• Je ne peux pas vraiment leur en vouloir, mais Bing est maintenant partout. Si je me trompe dans mon nom de fichier dans l'explorateur Windows, Bing! Dans la recherche de Chrome, Bing! Dans Internet Explorer, alors que je l'avais configuré pour utiliser Live: Bing! Ce genre de changement en traître est, je trouve, un petit peu limite.

Au final, rien de révolutionnaire, et je ne vais pas changer mes habitudes de recherche. Cependant, un peu de compétition est la bienvenue pour pousser un peu Google au derrière, et je me réjouis des batailles à venir!




Microsoft Bing - Bling bling?

It's the wave from the guys in Redmond. Agreed, I don't follow the news that closely, but for me, it was a total surprise to see this new search engine landing.

It's not too complicated to see who Microsoft got inspiration from. Let's describe it a bit:

- A website with very clean design
- A big text zone in the middle to enter the search terms
- Just on top, a few links: Web, Images, Videos, Shopping, News, Maps, More
- A few more links here and there: sign-up, privacy...

So? Google? Bing? Both of them, sir! Even the small "Beta" under the Bing logo reminds of the good old habits from the Mountain View firm.

So, what's Bing?

• The results look quite equivalent. Technical subjects bring the same websites, and more general searches both bring Wikipedia in a very good position.


• A few interesting differences: when looking for "deezer violon tante estelle", both bring my blog's feed in Wikio in first position. But Google only brings my actual post in second position, when Bing ignores it... So, has Microsoft some difficulties reading Google blogs? Are they avoiding them? Or is Google blocking them?


• I don't like the Bing image search, that loads images on the fly, which makes the scrolling particularly painful. Google's decision of having shorter pages with just a few pictures that load fast seems better.


• I can't really resent them for that, but Bing is now everywhere. If I get a filename slightly wrong in Windows Explorer, Bing! In the Google Chrome search: Bing! In Internet Explorer, that I had configured to use Live: Bing! If find this kind of change behind the scenes a bit offensive.

Finally, nothing too revolutionary, and I won't be changing my search habits. Nevertheless, I welcome some competition, and hope that this will keep pushing the both of them to give us better technology!
