Coup de tonnerre sur la toile, le navigateur de Google, appelé Chrome, est sorti! Une BD en explique la technologie et les choix architecturaux, en plus d'une phase de test qui semble bien au point.

Très curieux d'essayer moi-même la bête, je me suis précipité pour la téléchargé dès qu'elle a été disponible. Petit installeur à télécharger, lequel télécharge un gros installeur, 5 minutes plus tard, Chrome démarre, pompe mes signets et mon historique de Firefox, et se lance. Dès que j'eus compris que Chrome avait raison contre moi sur mes paramètres de proxy, je pus naviguer en toute sérénité. Cependant, grosse phase de test ou pas, au final, très peu de pages s'affichent sans problèmes avec un proxy. Voyez donc.

Very curious to try the beast myself, I hurled myself in downloading it as soon at it got available. Small installer to download, which downloads a big installer, 5 minutes later, Chrome starts, pumps my bookmarks and my history from Firefox, and shows up. A soon as I understood that Chrome was right against me about my proxy settings, I could serenely navigate. Nevertheless, big testing phase or not, actually very few pages display without any issue through a proxy. Have a look.




Tout d'abord, la BBC, que l'on ne peut pas accuser d'être un site hors des sentiers battus. Le résultat est horrible, tout se retrouve au milieu, les éléments à la suite des autres, le style et la plupart des images sont partis dans la nature.


First, the BBC, that can hardly be accused of being obscure. The result is awful, everything ends-up being in the middle, elements one after the other, the style and most images have run away.




Ensuite, la page de Google Chrome elle même. Certes, je suis mesquin, mais ne pas afficher sa propre page, il faut le faire! L'en-tête Google disparaît, ainsi que l'image centrale. Gageons que ce sera vite réparé.


Then, the Google Chrome page itself. Granted, I might be a bit mean, but not being able to display one's own page, that's quite bad! The Google header disappears, and the central picture. Let's bet this will quickly get fixed.




Finalement, allons chez la concurrence. La page de Microsoft s'affiche plutôt bien. L'en-tête a disparu (c'est une spécialité, on dirait!), et il manque quelques éléments sur la droite.


Finally, let's see the competition. Microsoft's page gets displayed quite well. The header has disappeared (looks like it's a speciality!), and there are a few elements missing on the right.


Beaucoup de bloggeurs se sont plaints, avec raison, que Google ajoutait une tâche dans Windows pour lancer son updateur au démarrage, puis le redémarrer si l'on se débarrassait du process, ce qui est un petit peu à la limite du malware. Connaissant la voracité de Google pour nos informations personnelles, c'est le genre de choses qui fait réfléchir à deux fois. Pourtant, dans la tâche, le commentaire précise: "Google Update Task uninstalls itself when there is no Google software using it. It may take a few hours for Google Update to detect it is time to uninstall.". J'ai testé, et en effet, un peu plus tard, la tâche et l'exécutable correspondant avaient disparu, ce qui n'absout pas, mais enlève une pierre de leur jardin.


Many bloggers complained, rightly, that Google was adding a scheduled task in Windows to launch its updater at startup and everytime we would get rid of the process, which is leaning slightly on the malware side. Knowing Google's voracity for personal information, this could make people think twice. Nevertheless, the task description says: "Google Update Task uninstalls itself when there is no Google software using it. It may take a few hours for Google Update to detect it is time to uninstall.". I tested it, and effectively, a bit later on, the task and the executable had disappeared. They won't get forgiveness, but that's not so bad.


Au final, je ne voudrais pas jeter la pierre à un produit aussi nouveau. Supporter la myriade de pages web aux standards plus ou moins cassés pour fonctionner sur tel ou tel navigateur est un travail de titan, encore plus si l'on passe par un proxy, et j'ai d'ailleurs reporté les sites ci-dessus à travers le rapporteur de bugs du navigateur. Les fondamentaux sont bons, et une bonne concurrence est toujours la bienvenue. Je n'abandonnerai pas Firefox, mais j'attends avec impatience une version Linux qui aurait été déplombée par la communauté!


Finally, I don't want to throw a stone at a product that is so new. Support the gazillions of web pages with more or less broken standards to comply with this or this browser is a gigantic task, even more when proxies are involved, and I reported the websites above with the bug reporter integrated in the browser. Fundamentals are good, and good competition is always welcome. I will not ditch Firefox, but I am eagerly awaiting a Linux version that would have been unloaded by the community!
