Pirates des Caraïbes 4 - La fontaine de jouvence

Je voulais voir "Into Eternity", le documentaire sur l'enfouissement des déchets nucléaires Finlandais, mais malheureusement cela faisait bien longtemps qu'il ne passait plus à Londres. Je me suis donc rabattu sur le quatrième opus des Pirates des Caraïbes. C'est éminemment distrayant, mais ne casse cependant pas 3 pattes à un palmipède (o<!). Reprenons les moments forts et les moments moins forts du film. Attention, spoilers.

Le tout début, qui se voulait flamboyant, m'a fait plutôt mauvaise impression. Comment peut-on croire un instant que Jack parvienne à prendre la place du juge, surtout pour un résultat nul puisque de toutes façons il avait prévu de détourner le panier à salades. Heureusement, la scène se transforme rapidement en une course poursuite pleine d'action. C'est là que le personnage de Jack prend toute sa dimension: là où la plupart des héros de films d'actions sortent leurs muscles et font de parfaites galipettes dans tous les sens, Jack cherche son équilibre, fait des mines déconfites, et se prend des gadins plus souvent qu'à son tour.

Arrive enfin la scène d'exposition, où l'on découvre la charmante Pénélope Cruz, au personnage malheureusement plutôt insignifiant. À partir de là, nous partons dans une aventure plutôt convenue, où il fait très souvent nuit.

La scène des sirènes est tout à fait intéressante, cependant. Déjà parce que les donzelles sont aussi charmantes que terrifiantes, et ensuite parce que la bataille roxe du poney.

Quelques balades plus ou moins intéressantes plus tard, le cureton a sauvé puis condamné puis re-sauvé une charmante sirène moins gourmande que ses frangines, les espagnols ont tout pété dans la baraque (eux au moins ont l'air de savoir pourquoi ils sont là, probablement le seul bon twist du film), et Jack abandonne sa copine pour des raisons obscures et récupère son bateau (fortement diminué, cependant (le bateau, pas Jack)). Ah, et il y avait Barbenoire et son lance flammes, et Barberousse et sa jambe de bois. L'on notera le repompage en règle d'Indiana Jones et la dernière croisade.

La 3D est agréable et pas trop insistante, les paysages plutôt sympa, et le film au final assez sombre et inquiétant pour un Disney. J'aurais aimé plus de séquences en mer et dans la journée, une quête moins évidente (tout le monde a l'air de savoir exactement quoi faire et où aller), peut-être d'autres personnages plus engageants. Mais bon, au final cela m'aura suffisamment amusé pour que j'en fasse une critique.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4, On Stranger Tides,

I wanted to see "Into Eternity", the documentary on burying nuclear waste in Finland, but it had been a long time it had stop to show in London. I therefore went on with the fourth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean. It's entertaining, but falls a long way from becoming a masterpiece. Beware, spoilers ahead.

The beginning, trying to be flamboyant, gave me quite a bad impression. How can one believe a single second that Jack could impersonate a judge, especially for absolutely no reason as he had already bribed the prison car anyway. Luckily, the scene turns into a good chase. These are the moments where Jack's character is the most interesting: contrary to the perfect gym of usual action heros, Jack is looking for balance, makes worried faces, and falls and slips more than his share.

Here we are finally with the exposition scene, to discover the charming Penelope Cruz, sadly a mostly insignificant character. From here starts a very conventional adventure, where it's the night most of the time.

The mermaids scene is very interesting, though. First because the gals are as charming as terrifying, and then because the battle is pretty cool.

A few more or less interesting walks afterwards, the priest has saved, lost and resaved a cute mermaid who happens to be slightly less hungry than her sisters, the Spanish have brought down the place (no-one expects the Spanish inquisition! It is to note that these are the only characters that seem to know what they want, and the twist here is the most interesting in the movie), and Jack leaves his girlfriend behind for very unclear reasons while getting his ship back (although in a very diminished state (the ship, not Jack)). Ah, and there was Blackbeard with a flame-thrower and Barbossa with a wooden leg. We'll note the strong "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" inspiration.

The 3D is nice and not too much in your face, the landscapes pretty nice, and the movie actually quite dark and scary for Disney. I would have liked more moments on the sea and in the sunlight, a quest less obvious (everybody seems to know what to do and where to go), and maybe other characters a bit more enthralling. In the end, it will have entertained me enough for me to bother writing something about it.

For the initiated, you can get yourself busy during the movie by trying to find all the moments that look like they are from Monkey Island!
